I Like To Stand Out
My oldest: “I enjoy standing out and being noticed.”- But then again, who doesn’t? The real question is, who has the bravery to confess it? I am not a religious person, but I recognize the significance of faith. I’ve attempted to attend church with my boys on a regular basis, but it’s always a battle since they dislike the formality.
Coming from a Caribbean background, I value the tradition of dressing up for church. However, my American boys prioritize comfort above all else. After a bit of persuasion (or force, as they would put it), I managed to get them into a three-piece outfit. Their displeasure was palpable on our way to church, with endless complaints.
Yet, the moment they stepped into the church and started receiving compliments, their attitudes shifted. Kenn, my elder son, pulled me aside to share how he was receiving praise for his attire, and he simply responded with a thank you. After catechism, he admitted to more compliments, which made him feel good.
On our journey back, I started my mom’s speech about how it wasn’t as bad as they thought it would be. That’s when Kenn confessed that he liked the attention and even requested to keep the outfit on for a bit longer.
Instilling high standards in your children or within yourself is not always easy, especially when the majority opt for comfort. It’s a reminder that standing out doesn’t require drastic measures. I admire my son for expressing his preference.
As a new week begins, I will remember that standing out is more accessible than it seems. All it takes is the willingness to do more than one is required to do.
As always, I share these reflections as a reminder that you are not alone on this journey called life. Until then, take care of yourself. Love, Katursia.
